NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Launches Sensory Saturdays

Nov 07, 2024 by admin

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is introducing  Sensory Saturdays to provide a sensory-inclusive museum experience for children with diverse neurodivergent needs, ages 6-17, and their families. NSU Art Museum stands as the only museum in Broward that has received certification from KultureCity®, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory requirements.

Sensory Saturdays will last from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 9, Jan 11 and March 15. These events give families a unique chance to create art in designated workspaces and explore the Museum in a serene and supportive atmosphere. Guests will enjoy early and complimentary access to the galleries, which will be adjusted for lower lighting and reduced noise to ensure a more comfortable experience.

“NSU Art Museum is dedicated to making art accessible and inclusive for everyone in our community,” says Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator at NSU Art Museum. “By continuously exploring new initiatives and partnerships, we strive to ensure that every visitor feels welcome and valued, celebrating the diverse perspectives that enrich our cultural landscape.”

As a KultureCity® Certified Museum, the staff and security at NSU Art Museum have received training to enhance their understanding of sensory processing needs. During museum hours, KultureCity® Sensory Bags will be accessible to visitors of all ages who require sensory support. These bags include noise-canceling headphones, weighted lap pads, cozy seating, and sensory-friendly art supplies, making the museum an inclusive space for everyone at all times.

“We are thrilled to launch Sensory Saturdays and offer a unique, welcoming space for neurodivergent children and their families to experience art in a way that is tailored to their needs,” says Lisa Quinn, Lillian S. Wells Education Curator. “This program highlights our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Through our KultureCity® Certification, NSU Art Museum is making strides to be more inclusive by creating opportunities for our neurodivergent community, anytime, not only on Sensory Saturdays.”

Entry to Sensory Saturday is complimentary, but registration is necessary. Registration begins one month before each event. To allow all interested families to join, the Museum kindly asks that any cancellations be communicated in advance, as space is limited.

“Empowering communities through inclusion and innovation, NSU Art Museum is aligned with the same visionary spirit as KultureCity® and is championing a world where every individual, regardless of ability, is not just accepted but celebrated for their unique contributions to the tapestry of humanity,” says Uma Srivastava, Executive Director of KultureCity®.

This program is made possible thanks to the generous contributions from the Robert E. Dooley Trust NSU Center for Autism Endowment Fund. For more information or assistance registering for Sensory Saturdays, please call 954-262-0204, visit https://nsuartmuseum.org/, or email education1@nova.edu.
